School mixes up its lunch hour - STUDENTS SIT IN NEW GROUPS IN PROMOTION OF FRIENDLINESS

Sixth-graders Danielle Burnley and Morgan Johnson sat across from each other like old friends, munching on chicken nuggets and sipping juice.

As chummy as they seemed, both said they weren't buddies. The Lexington Traditional Magnet School students would see each other in the hallway from time to time, but they never thought to approach one another.

That is, until yesterday, when the 11-year-olds were forced to sit together during the school's "Mix-It-Up" program, where students in grades six through eight gave up their usual lunchroom spots to meet new friends. The event is part of the school's three-week-long anti-bullying campaign.

"We are trying to get kids to break out of their groups and interact with people that are different than them," said Principal Clay Goode. The anti-bullying campaign "makes sure kids understand the different forms that bullying can take, whether it's verbal or physical intimidation."

When lunch began at 11:10 a.m., students looked nervous. They reluctantly abandoned their friends after receiving candy bars that designated what table they were to sit at. Many ate lunch quietly at the corner of tables, earnestly waiting for a familiar face to join them.

Alec Henthorne, 11, sat alone eating his cheese and pepperoni sandwich and sipping his kiwi-strawberry juice. He saw his friends a table away but was looking forward to sitting apart from them.

"I like meeting new people and stuff," he said. "It's kind of good to see the cafeteria with people sitting in different places."

Ten minutes into the exercise, the room looked like any other middle school cafeteria. Students talked and laughed between bites. School officials said there was a lot more energy in the air.

"They really seem interested in the mystery of who they're sitting with today," said Associate Principal Paul Rhorer. "One of the kids said, 'Mr. Rhorer, this is tight,' whatever that means."

Goode said the anti-bullying campaign will include classroom lectures about tolerance and promoting diversity.

"At LTMS, (bullying) is probably less of a problem than at most of the (elementary) schools and middle schools in Kentucky," said Goode, who came on board as principal this year. "But even if we're dealing with a few cases, that's just too many."

Mix-It-Up is a national event and a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center's tolerance programs.

Goode said officials at LTMS would like to have an annual Mix-It-Up event.
